Suseong International Biennale 2026 (Oct 27-Nov 22): Free Lakeside Architecture Show in Daegu, Hours and Getting There
Suseongmot Lake, a lakeside park in the south of Daegu, is hosting the 2026 Suseong International Biennale (2026 수성국제비엔날레) from Tuesday, October 27 to Sunday, November 22, 2026. This biennale is about architecture and landscape: it shares the designs for real public buildings, parks and pavilions planned around Suseong District. The exhibition is in Sanghwa Garden (상화동산) on the lake shore, and entry is free. Suseong-gu hosts it and the Suseong Culture Foundation organises it.
Why it's worth a visit
- Big names in one small district. The participating architects and designers include Kengo Kuma, Ole Scheeren, Chris van Duijn (OMA) and Korean architect Seung H-sang. Their projects range from a wood-themed community centre to small galleries by a reservoir and a public restroom in a forest.
- A clear theme: "Living Ground". The co-artistic directors, architect John Hong (Seoul National University) and landscape architect Kim Ah-Yeon (University of Seoul), treat the ground as a living part of the city, not just a base to build on.
- Information in English. The official program page is written in both Korean and English.
- Hands-on activities. Drop-in activities include the DDUBI tower-building game, "Living Village" (build your own block village) and an outdoor library. On weekends you can also try hanok (traditional house) joinery, roof-tile stacking and paper architecture models.
- A lake walk in the same trip. The path around Suseongmot is about 2 km, and the lake is lit up after dark.
When
- Dates: Oct 27 to Nov 22, 2026
- Hours: Monday-Friday 12:00-21:00, Saturday-Sunday 10:00-21:00
- Weekend programs with sign-up: an "Earth Gardener" lake walk with gardener Kim Jang-hoon, outdoor meditation and a children's show. Register online through the Suseong Culture Foundation or on site.
- Stamp tour (Nov 14-15): Deuran Art Mall → MOTII → Biennale. Finish it to get a small souvenir.
- Bonus until the end of October: the lake's media-art music fountain runs evening shows at 19:00, 20:00 and 21:00 (11 minutes each), with a longer main show at 20:00 on Saturdays and Sundays. It does not run on Mondays or in rain, and the schedule can change during lake events.
- Programs can change, so check the official page before you go.
Cost
- Entry is free, according to Korea Tourism Organization's listing.
- The lake park itself is free and open at all hours.
- Food and drinks around the lake cost extra.
Getting there
- Venue: Sanghwa Garden, Suseongmot Lake (499-4 Dusan-dong, Suseong-gu, Daegu / 대구 수성구 두산동 499-4).
- By metro: take Daegu Metro Line 3 to Suseongmot Station (수성못역). From Line 1, which also stops at Dongdaegu Station (KTX), transfer to Line 3 at Myeongdeok Station and leave Suseongmot Station by Exit 1. The tourist information centre at the east entrance of Sanghwa Garden is about a 10-minute walk from the station.
- Line 3 is a monorail that runs high above the street, so the ride doubles as a city view.
- By bus: city buses including Express 2 (급행2), 400, 401, 410 and 449 stop near the lake.
Tips
- Crowds: the lake is busiest on weekend evenings. Weekday afternoons are calmer.
- Timing: on weekdays the exhibition opens at 12:00, so come after lunch. It gets dark early in November, so bring a warm layer if you plan to stay for the lake at night.
- Sign-ups: the Suseong Culture Foundation registration site is in Korean, so a translation app helps.
- Safety: stay on the lit paths at night and keep a little distance from the water's edge.
- Help on site: the Suseongmot tourist information centre (37 Suseongmot-gil) is at the east entrance of Sanghwa Garden.
Going alone?
omeetu has a meetup spot at Suseongmot Lake itself. Open a meetup there to find others heading to the biennale, or join one going on the same day. Meet first in a busy public place, and keep chats inside the app. Teen members have limits on meetups between 22:00 and 06:00, so plan to head back early.
